An Appreciation
of "Unsolved Bliss-teries" By Herc Samuelson (Dutch News Services, 10 Nov '99)
Trans.: H. Lounch
Every man naturally desires a superiority, to have treasures
of gold and silver, and to seem great in the eyes of the world.
In UNSOLVED BLISS-TERIES, his third (!) solo album of 1999,
New York's George Elliott has achieved a kind of greatness
attained by few artists. Like his friend Klaus Nomi
(who recorded Elliott's compositions "ICUROK" and "Three Wishes"),
George Elliott dares to reach beyond the worthless confines
of modern urban banality.
UNSOLVED BLISS-TERIES' 26 songs crystallize key aspects of
earthly and otherworldly existence. Kabbalistic word play,
refreshingly twisted philosophical references and bent personal
observations are backed with catchy melodies in a wide variety
of styles, including Psychedelic, Folk, Pop, Rock and even
Reggae. Projecting his personality into infinity, Elliott
sings, screams, crawls, dances, plays, mouths, gyrates, cavorts,
coaxes, demands, talks and in short, gives a complete performance
with heavily mystical (yet still humorous!) overtones.
Standout cuts include the anti-sex "Oughta Be A Law," the
Pink Floyd / Laetitia tribute "Hollowhead Beauty-Flex," "Christ
Belief / Cross Doubt" ("People need / Steeples bleed / Demon
seed / Semen deed"), Bunny Wailer's "Dance Rock," Gram Parsons'
"Sin City" and, evoking the majesty of the ineffable spheres
of the Sephiroth, "Sephir Yetzirah."
Heliocentric promises CD compilations of George Elliott's
NY New Wave bands COME ON and STRANGE PARTY
in the near future.
Simple, cerebral pop is a lost art, but these 26 two-minute
songs have a thinking-man's quality. They're unadorned ditties
built around acoustic guitar twilling, drums and bass mixed
so low you'd barely notice them, and keyboard flourishes.
(And is that not a kazoo we hear in the background of "Mystery
Song," and a recorder on "Unbeknownst"?) But it's Elliott's
overpronounced vocals that makes UNSOLVED something other
than the umpteenth home-recorded demos by the unimaginative.
His spare words are curious, his cadences abrupt and full
of odd personality, and his bent reminds of the late '70s,
when genuine eccentrics were drawn to make quirky, unusual
music that was called new wave, but was really only one step
removed from Dr Demento's show-from early Devo and Talking
Heads to an army of lesser-known such as Tin Huey, Pere Ubu,
R Stevie Moore, Nash the Slash, the Residents, Mutants, Klaus
Nomi, Units, etc. (The only thing they had in common were
their unusual approaches and smarts.) Extra points for folksy
covers of BUNNY WAILER'S "Dance Rock" and GRAM PARSONS AND
CHRIS HILLMAN'S FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS' classic "Sin City".
