(A RARE GREEN MAN ON THE GREEK CHURCH 10TH ST.-AVE A) Many small apartment buildings in Manhattan feature the handiwork of stonecarvers who a century ago left their legacies in the form of 'the Green Man', a quasi-pagan image that combines human and plant! Brows sprout leaves, beards consist of nettle growths, nostrils & mouths spew forth foliage, a metamorphosis of flesh and plant is immortalized in mineral! Europe and the British Isles are the richest in this tradition, where churches and cathedrals are rife with various Green Men hid or openly interwoven amongst carved saints & angels! Echoes are also present in world religions from Jainism's "Faces of Glory" to Sufism's legendary Khidr figure to Egypt's Osiris cult... This initial combination of Green Man photos and Osiris effigy will be followed by a series including most of Lower Manhattan's sandstone carvings of these organic archetypes or "Earth-father"-figures, who silently, enigmatically yet somehow protectively watch over us... I am happy to salute and celebrate these greatly skilled and devoted immigrant-artisans who brought with them and augmented this timely, Gaia-intimate tradition!
