Presents its First Official Full-Length Release:
GNOSTIC SONGS by GEORGE ELLIOTT
...Or the Esthetics of Spontaneous Creation
An Introduction by "Stinky" Davelmeyer
Look we're not going to say everyone else sucks, but we all
know
such is a woefully accurate description of the state of what
should be cutting-edge relevant pop/indie/college fare for
the
ears & souls (not to mention $$$) of our youth (misspent!)!
-You got unabashed satanic spandexed dipsomaniacs, drug &
lust-
filled Geeks!, sexchanged freaks, vampires & Frankenstein-triumphs
of plastic surgery -- unimaginably unoriginal lowlifes with
the
very hearts & souls of our (lost) youths in their sweaty hands!!
What we all need, instead, is along the lines pursued by GE
over
the last 20 years... effortless no-budget 'poprockfolkpsycheregga
egrungelessmysticalhumorousharmonicpercussivecelebratory'
sounds
of one servant of the Muse(of Ic) working from a position
of pure
blissful unintentional creative overflow...
No smoky rooms, late nights, out-of-it audiences, or touring
schedules to deal with; no musicians & rehearsals to deaden
whatever magic might have happened when the song was written...
(shades of Glenn Gould?)
Rather, witness the approach GE took in his years of home
recording: one inventive intuitive artist in touch with both
the
furthest flights of imaginative /spiritual fancy and in communion
with the deepest founts of spontaneous bliss/creativity, capturing
the process, 'accidents', indeed the unanticipated magic!
of
moment-of-inspiration creation...on a trusty not-fancy 4-track
(10- layer) cassette recorder.
George handles all instrumental & vocal chores, sudden arrangements,
lyric decisions, etc, once the riff or germ-melody appears,
and a
whole song is born after 1-2 hours of 'work'...
Remixing (at state-of-the-art facilities) is occasionally
performed,
but often the transition to CD is done merely by transferring
the
original session's cassette reference mix to computer for
boosting
+ eq, then CD-ification!
To put in layman's terms, 4-track home recordings made without
any
outboard gear or other musicians, without even using an electric
guitar in several years!; churning out hundreds of good, dozens
of
great, and several CDs' worth of classic 'art'/ pop songs
shouldn't:
A. sound this good; & B. be so easy to do!...
--This guy is somewhere between a sideshow freak who can paint
a nice
picture using an eyelash + drops of his blood (while-U-wait)&
a "Jack
Kerouac of the 4-track," a "Portastudio Picasso", a happy-go-lucky
cityogi/Saint George/ William Blake of the real chronapocalypse...
(both of the 'O'Neill' line!)
So, to experience 1st-hand what we're going on a bit garrulously
about :
1. Have your ears checked for previous damage or accumulation
of
foreign matter;
2. Get a lobotomy to forget all the crap you've been listening
to!
(jes kiddin')
3. I mean Don't ever change, ya knucklehead!
4. Poot the damn thing on & PAR-TY!
Massage those hungry braincells & cranial glands with the
sunny
vibrations of someone you can trust! -Orphic throats overflowing
with dawnfresh ecstatic birdsong to quench the soul... Or
stomp & sway
with a reggae sashay, let the enerjoy harmonize!

EXPERT REVIEW: On this collection of solo home four-track
recordings, cut between 1995-98, Elliott sings low-key paisley
pop tunes. Though most of the songs are original, the few
covers -- of Procol Harum's "She Wandered Through the Garden
Fence," Gene Clark's "Gypsy Rider," and the obscure British
'60s psychedelic B-side by Dantalion's Chariot, "Sun Came
Bursting Through My Clouds" -- are indicative of his sensibility
and inspirations. Although there's an understandable homemade
feel about the production, it's well-suited for his slightly
wacky, tuneful miniatures. Like some of his work on other
albums, Syd Barrett serves as a general reference point, in
the playfulness, the blend of psychedelic and folk-rock ingredients,
and the haunting keyboard parts. He isn't as avowedly strange
as Barrett, and in fact sometimes he's pretty frivolous, echoing
bubblegum new wave or sunshine pop. No doubt a "proper" company
would have edited this down to less than 27 songs, even though
none of them break the four-minute barrier, and many end before
the two-minute mark. These sort of DIY productions, though,
do allow for an auteurish feel that would probably get muted
or whitewashed even by many indie labels, so this is something
for which we can be thankful. -- Richie Unterberger
